A Little Bit About Me....

I made my first quilt in 1996 after a lifetime of admiring and collecting antique quilts, tops, blocks, and fabrics. That first quilt was aptly named "Big Ugly" and it was as much of a learning experience as it was a trainwreck masquerading as a quilt! Regardless of how it looked, Big Ugly did get me hooked on quilting and I couldn't wait to make my next quilt. As a self-taught quilter, though, I probably made every mistake known in the quilting world, but I persevered, read a lot of books, and kept on quilting. Eventually, I landed a part-time job in a local quilt shop, The Quilt Square. I took some classes at the shop and asked a lot of questions from the experienced quilters around me. It wasn't long before I began to teach myself free-motion quilting and to design my own quilts using Electric Quilt software.
The turning point in my life as a quilter happened when I acquired a huge collection of antique quilt blocks, tops, and fabric from a local garage sale in 2006. I was sew inspired by this collection, that I began making my first "orphan quilts" featuring antique and vintage quilt blocks paired with new reproduction fabrics. This experiment led to the publication of my first book, Orphan Block Quilts: Making a Home for Antique, Vintage, Collectible, and Leftover Quilt Blocks in 2010. At that time, I also started designing for many popular quilting magazines and other publications. My second book, A Russian Journey in Quilts: The Story of Nicholas and Nina Filatoff came out in 2013. My third quilt book, I Love Precut Quilts! came out in 2016.
And now in 2021 -- my 4th book has come out! It's called Feed Sacks: A Collection of Feed Sack, Sugar Sack, Grain and Feed Bag Prints and Designs Volume I. This is the first book in a new series that I am working on, Fabric Study.
